Westside Woodshed: A Cabin Retreat In The Pentland Hills
Architect designed cabin for two near Edinburgh, Scotland.
We recently had a long weekend’s getaway at The Westside Woodshed; a Scandinavian inspired cabin just a few miles outside of Edinburgh. Found at the end of a winding farm track and tucked into the heather clad Pentland Hills Regional Park, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Woodshed feels like everything a hideaway ought to be.
We wanted a slow, relaxing, weekend retreat. Somewhere we could briefly escape the pace of city life and breathe the country air. The Westside Woodshed was exactly that. For me, it ticked every box…
Miminal, Scandi cabin tick.
Beautiful scenery, tick.
Wood-fired hot tub, tick tick tick.
A Rural Retreat
The location is perfect, tucked into Pentland Hills the Woodshed is surrounded by stunning scenery in every direction. The nearby area includes The South Black Hill, Hare Hill and The Kips, which are all visible and accessible. Despite being a glorious hideaway in the wild, the Westside Woodshed is actually only a short drive from Edinburgh city centre. It is rural enough to feel like a retreat whilst being close enough to other humans to not feel completely shut off. There are local artisan shops, and a pub nearby, it really is it best of both worlds.
On our arrival we were welcomed by owner Jenny who was so friendly and helpful. Jenny recommend a short walk up the hill behind the cabin. At the top was the most incredible 360 degree view where we could see for miles and miles. We stayed up there to watch the sun go down, took in the view and let the wind blow the cobwebs away. It was the perfect start to super relaxing weekend.
All of the hygge
The Woodshed blends perfectly into it’s surroundings. With silvered timber cladding and whitewashed wood panels that make it almost disappear into the hills behind. The large glazed doors mean the light floods inside, allowing a constant view of the rolling hills and the ever-changing sky.
The interiors are paired back but thoughtful with a laid back vibe that fuses understated, minimal design with comfort and style. Toasty underfloor heating, bare wood walls and soft furnishings come together to create the perfect space for a proper hygge experience. The crackling wood burner makes it extra cosy! The mezzanine style interior means that the Woodshed manages to feel both open and snug at the same time. A big open plan kitchen made for a couple of really enjoyable chilled out evenings, cooking together with a glass of red.
Storm Ciara hit on the Saturday morning of our weekend stay and the weather outside was wild! Anywhere else I might have been sad to be trapped inside but it was actually wonderful. We kept the fire lit, drank hot coffee and watched the storm out of the huge glazed doors. I felt so cosy nestled up by the fire with my book while the wind whistled around the cabin. In our fast paced world it was the perfect opportunity to properly slow down and actually relax, it was the calmest I’d felt in such a long time.
Snow in the Pentland Hills
On the Monday morning we woke up to the hills covered in snow. It was absolutely beautiful (even if I was a little nervous for the drive home!). We really had all the seasons in one weekend with sunshine on the Friday, wind and rain on the Saturday and snow on the Monday. I can confirm that the Westside Woodshed is dreamy whatever the weather. Huge thanks to owner, Jenny who gave us a lift in the 4x4 to save our little rental car from the worst of the snow.
Relaxed and Recharged
Our weekend at the The Westside Woodshed was the absolute definition of slow travel, we both came home feeling so relaxed and recharged. I think it is good for the soul to be lost in nature for a few days. For anyone visiting Scotland, or seeking a quiet getaway in the countryside, I would definitely recommend this little hideaway.
I would love to visit the Pentland Hills again one day, prehaps in the summer, when the days are longer and we can explore the surrounding hills some more. For now though I will enjoy the memories of our super cosy, relaxing weekend retreat. Thank you Westside Woodshed…we will be back!
